Boy Scout Troop 58 and Cub Scout Pack 58 have been sponsored by Downsville Christian Church for a long time - over 60 years in the case of the Boy Scouts.  In that time we have seen the population and the vitality of the Troop ebb and flow.  Some of the strongest years were when Rev. Christian was the Scoutmaster.

Today we have - easily - the most vital and largest Scout Troop 58 ever.   Dave Campbell, Brian Dagenhart, Bob Huff, Terry Hammond, and four other leaders have made Troop 58 one of - if not the one - most active and service oriented troops in the Mason-Dixon Council.

Two scouts are Eagles; two scouts have completed their Eagle projects and are awaiting the Council’s

paperwork finale so they can have their Courts of Honor.  The diversity of the Eagle Projects reflects each scout’s commitment  of community service.  One benefited the Ruritan which has strongly supported Troop 58, one benefited this church, one benefited Camp Mary-Mac where the Scouts often camp, on benefited the Maryland State Park system.   One more scout will probably attain the rank of Eagle within a year or so.  Very few - if any - Troops can point to that level of achievement.

The Boy Scouts spent the week of July 18 at Camp Sinoquipe.  Tom Feigley and I (Craig) joined them on Friday to eat and tour the camp.  Troop 58 has been instrumental in building and refurbishing  - at their own expense and time - much of the physical plant of the camp including the Chapel and an overhead “obstacle course”.  While there, the nineteen campers earned  a combined total of sixty merit badges.  Three boys are there this week (July 25 to August 31) to earn badges which are specifically required for Eagle rank.  Three boys are on staff.

When I arrived in Downsville there were six  Boy Scouts in Troop 58 and nine Cub Scouts in Pack 58. Because of excellent

leadership providing an excellent program there are now - four and a half years later - forty five Boy Scouts including two of our members - Ronnie Dagenhart and Chris Benner - and forty Cub Scouts.

Under the leadership of Cubmaster Dan Horn the Cub Scouts have and are thriving.  The 12 month program Pack 58 offers has attracted Cubs from less active programs to Join Pack 58.

The leadership of both Pack and Troop take as much training as they can fit into their busy lives. They also serve the community during their training.

Paul Rhodes, one of the leaders of Pack 58 has repaired and painted the fence hiding the air-conditioning units.  This is one of his projects toward his Wood Badge - a distinctive achievement marking excellent Scouting leadership.

As one of her Wood Badge projects Cub leader Darlene Huff painted the Scout room and obtained the cabinets in which she created the display the Scout's achievements.

Cubmaster Dan Horn is also working on his Wood Badge.

District Council Representative Terry Hammond received his Wood Badge in 2006.

Scoutmaster Dave Campbell achieved his Wood Badge in 2009.  One of his projects was painting the outside stair case and corridor to the Scout Room.

The Scouts are our largest Outreach project.  We have a give – give relationship which I see giving far into the future.
